ABOUT ME

Ciao! I’m Vito, a real Matera-born, licensed and passionate tour guide and lifelong learner. Matera is the city I love. I’m very proud to have been born and raised here, in one of the most unique places in the world. When I was a kid, and the Sassi of Matera were still mostly abandoned, they were a sort of big playground for me and my friends. I used to play like a little Indiana Jones, exploring them and feeding my passion for history and for my hometown.

Anyone who knows me says I’ve always been a tour guide at heart—because of my deep passion for beauty, knowledge, and sharing it.
I love research, learning, and writing. Over the years, I’ve kept studying, earning a second degree in Cultural Heritage with a focus on archaeology, and publishing various articles and essays. One of them, on the history of public lighting in Matera, received the Antros award as best article published in Mathera magazine.

Currently, I’m also pursuing further academic studies in human nutrition and expanding my interests in science communication and health-related research. Writing, in all its forms, plays a key role in my work—understanding complex ideas and conveying them in a simple and clear way, whether I’m leading a tour, sharing local history, or engaging with broader topics.

So come and discover Matera with me. I’ll guide you through its past and present with competence, enthusiasm, and a unique local perspective. My mission is to make you love this extraordinary city!

But I also love to travel and explore the world. When I was 19, I moved to northern Italy for my Master’s degree in Pharmacy. After that, I spent a few years working in Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Rome, while also traveling and backpacking as much as I could. I’ve spent lots of my time all over Europe—and yet I’ve chosen to live in Matera. Here, doing this wonderful job, feels like traveling every day. I have a great time meeting people from all around the world and showing them the things I love. It’s like the world comes to me!
